How to make WhatsApp voice and video calls from your computer

Last Thursday, WhatsApp's instant messaging service launched voice and video calls — which are private and secure — in the desktop version of its app, to make it easier for users who use their computers to communicate and work from home now.

You can now make free voice and video calls with your contacts via WhatsApp on your computer if the app is installed on your device and not through the web version. Through the app, you can contact any of your contacts as long as they are connected to the Internet and use a smartphone, tablet or compatible computer.

The call feature in the WhatsApp desktop version works in Windows 10 computers or any later version, mac computers running macOS 10.13, or any later version.

Receiving calls on a larger screen makes it easier to work with colleagues, see family members clearly, or talk while moving in the room without having to stick to holding a device in your hand. To make the most of the calls, WhatsApp has developed the feature to make calls work efficiently, both vertically and horizontally.

WhatsApp voice and video calls will be fully encrypted between the two parties using end-to-end encryption in the desktop app, so WhatsApp can't listen to or see them, whether you're making them from your phone or computer.

The public interface will also be familiar to anyone who uses WhatsApp on your phone, but there are some major differences between making phone or computer calls:

  • Calls appear in a separate window that can be resized.
  • The connection window will always be at the top of the computer screen, so you don't lose track of it in the middle of other open browser apps, folders, or tabs.
  • The window can also be resized and moved and will be automatically coordinated to horizontal or vertical mode based on the current dimensions of the window.
  • WhatsApp supports only individual calls, unlike WhatsApp for the phone, but the service plans to add group voice and video calls to the desktop app in the future.

But right now, you can't make or join conference calls from a computer, but there are many computer apps that support conference calls if you need an alternative.

Today we will review the requirements for making or receiving WhatsApp calls on a computer, and how to contact your contacts through your computer:

First, what are the requirements for making WhatsApp calls or getting them on the computer:

  • Microphone: Either an internal microphone in the laptop or an external microphone connected to the desktop.
  • Camera: If you plan to use video calls.
  • You'll also need to sign in to your WhatsApp account on a smartphone, then connect to the Internet on your computer and phone, knowing that the call won't be made over your phone, but the phone must be connected to the Internet to start the call.
  • WhatsApp gives access to the microphone and camera on your computer.

Second, how to make WhatsApp calls through a computer:

  • Open WhatsApp on your computer.
  • Select the contact you want to communicate with audio or video.
  • You'll find a new voice and video call icons at the top right of the screen, select a call or video call.

  • If the other person replies, the call will start.
  • When you receive an audio or video call,
  • you'll see a pop-up window where you can accept or reject the incoming call.

Call controls are the same as those on the phone: click the microphone to mute or unmute; the camera icon turns the video connection on or off; and the red button ends the call.

You can also switch to video chat during the call by clicking the camera icon during a voice call. The other person will be asked to accept or cancel the application. If he agrees, the voice call will be switched to a video call.
