4 Ways to Solve The Webcam Shutdown Problem on Windows 10

In a world where video calls via computers or smartphones have become absolutely necessary, whether for communication, work or study, knowing how to fix problems when a webcam stops working on windows 10 is a must-have whether the camera is integrated into a laptop or an external computer as well as a desktop.

A computer webcam can suddenly stop for a number of reasons, including: a driver problem, recent operating system updates, or computer privacy settings that block access to the camera.

So if you notice problems with the built-in webcam in your laptop or external desktop camera, Windows 10 includes several ways to fix common issues with many built-in tools.

First: The discovery of the webcam in windows 10:

Sometimes, the operating system may not detect the webcam automatically after connecting it to the computer, especially in desktop computers, requiring you to do so manually, through the following steps:

  • Plug in your webcam if you're using a desktop computer.
  • Press the Windows logo on the left side of the screen with the right button.
  • From the list that appears to you, click on device manager.
  • In the window that shows you, press the Actions tab at the top.
  • From the list that appears to you, click on the Scan for Hardware Changes option.

  •  The operating system will search for any new devices that are connected to the computer and insert them automatically.
  • After you're done, restart the computer to implement the changes.

Note: If you don't detect the camera, disconnect it, restart the computer, then connect it again via another USB port, and repeat the previous steps again, if you don't detect the camera, try connecting it to another computer to make sure that the problem isn't in the camera itself, if it's not working too, maybe it's time to upgrade the webcam to a newer model.

Second: Allowing apps to access the camera:

Typically, Windows 10 automatically restricts applications such as: video call apps from accessing your microphone and camera to help you protect your privacy and improve security, requiring you to allow this in computer settings, and to do so, follow the following steps:

  • Go to the Settings page on windows 10.
  • Click on the Privacy section.
  • On the left side of the screen that shows you, tap the Camera tab.
  • On the right side of the screen, under the Allow access to the camera on this device, click the Change option.
  • In the pop-up that appears to you, switch the button to play mode.
  • Under the Allow apps option, switch the button below to play.

Note: For more control over your privacy, you can select specific apps to turn on the camera, within the Choose Microsoft Store apps that have access to the camera.

Third: Retrieving the previous camera driver:

Sometimes, camera manufacturers may offer updates with compatibility issues, so if the webcam is working normally before the driver updates, restoring the previous version can solve the problem, and to do so, follow the following steps:

  • Press the Windows logo on the left side of the screen with the right button.
  • From the list that appears to you, click on device manager.
  • In the window that shows you, expand the option that contains the camera, which is often imaging devices or Cameras.
  • Press the camera name with the right-click, then choose Properties from the window that shows you.

  • In the window that shows you, press the Driver tab.
Click on the Roll Back Driver option.

  • In the window that shows you, select one of the reasons from the list, and then press (OK) Yes.

Confirm it again, then restart the computer.

Note: This process will prevent windows 10 update from installing the camera driver again, however, when a new camera update is available it will be downloaded and installed automatically.

Fourth: Check the privacy settings in the antivirus program:

Some third-party antivirus and other third-party security software come with privacy settings that can prevent apps from accessing the webcam in Windows 10, so you should review the privacy settings in the security app in your computer to automatically operate the camera.
