3 Ways to Fix The Problem of Google Assistant Not Playing Movies


Google Assistant is designed to facilitate the performance of tasks, such as: scheduling, sending text messages, playing movies and presentations from a variety of streaming services, all via audio only, but sometimes we are unable to play movies more specifically.

When Google Assistant doesn't play movies from any service you use, it's usually because you don't set enough permissions in the app. When you're not able to play movies from a particular service, it's usually because you're using the wrong Google account, or you haven't linked the streaming service to Google Assistant, and other reasons.

So today we'll review 3 ways to help you explore and fix this problem:

1- Check the permissions in the Google Assistant app:

When Google Assistant can't play movies, the first thing you should check is: Does the Google Assistant app have the right permissions in the phone to play movies, as the assistant needs to allow it to access the microphone as much as possible to be able to hear your voice commands.

In addition, it also needs access to a variety of other permissions to perform all the tasks it can do, and to check and adjust permissions, you can follow the following steps:

  • Go to (Settings) in your Android phone.
  • Tap the Apps & Notifications option, then click on google.
  • Click on the Permissions option.
  • On the screen that appears to you, switch the button next to each permission to play.


Note: The assistant may not need all of these permissions to play movies, but giving him access to all permissions will allow you to know whether the problem is with the permissions or not, and after making sure that the assistant can play movies after all permissions are turned on, you can later turn off permissions that the assistant doesn't want to reach.

2- Make sure you're using the correct Google account:

By default Google Assistant will play movies from the Google Play Movie Store and then you should use the same account you use with the assistant in the Google TV application, since having multiple accounts in Google and not matching the assistant of each account may cause problems.

To check the Google accounts you use with the assistant and google play movie store and change them if necessary, follow the following steps:

  • Open the Google Assistant app in your phone.
  • Click on the Account option.
  • Click on the Google account you want to use with the assistant, then click on your account image.
  • Open the Google TV app.
  • Check that the account shown on the left is the same account used in the Google TV app.
  • If not, click on the account image associated with the account you selected in the Google TV app.

Note: If you don't see the Google account you want to use, click on the add account option and follow the instructions that appear on the screen.

3- Linking google account to movie streaming services:

The assistant can play movies from a large number of video streaming services, but it only works if you link your Google account to these services, such as: Netflix or HBO, and to do so, follow the following steps:

  • Open the Google Assistant app in your phone, then tap your account image.
  • From the menu that appears to you, click on settings.
  • On the screen that shows you scroll down, then tap the Video & Photos (video and photos) option.


  • Click on the video streaming service you want to link to the assistant, then click on the Link option.
  • Click on the LINK ACCOUNT option.
  • Enter your login details, then click on sign in and Link.) option.
  • Select your account for the video streaming service, then click on the Confirm option.
