Losing or stealing your smartphone can be a real misfortune, as it contains so much personal data and information - such as passwords, photos, and credit card information - that if you get into the wrong hands, you will be in trouble.

To prevent this, you must take some precautions early, by making some basic measures that you must take immediately after losing or stealing your phone, as well as if you do not lose your phone, be sure to apply some of the steps that we will mention in this article so that you are better prepared if you lose it in sometime.

What should you do if your smartphone is lost or stolen?

First: What do you do to reduce the damage when you lose your smartphone:

1- Set a strong and unique passcode:


The first step to reducing the damage caused by losing your smartphone is to set a strong personal identification number or password, and this means moving away from choosing words or numbers, such as: 1234, abcd or 0000, and if your phone has facial recognition technology or a scanner Fingerprint scanner, make sure one or both of them are on, as they add another layer of security.

2- Turn on Find My Device:


You must make sure that the (Find My Device) feature on your Android phone or (Find My iPhone) iPhone is turned on so that you can locate your lost phone or wipe the data and information on it remotely, as this will increase the likelihood that you will be able to recover your phone. ; This will save you a lot of trouble and money.

3- Keep the IMEI number of your phone:


If your smartphone is lost or stolen, there is a possibility that the thief will try to sell it online, and before this happens you must write the IMEI number of your phone - which you will find on the Android phone under the About phone section in the Settings application, and on the iPhone press * 6 # - On an external sheet, and keep it until you can claim it and prove your ownership of it, if it appears at any time.

Second: What to do if your smartphone is lost or stolen:

1- Call or text your lost phone:


The first thing you should do when you lose a smartphone is to call or text it, as it may not be lost, but it is somewhere around you, and it may be behind the seat in the living room or in the work office. And if you discover that the phone is really missing, someone might find it trying to return it to you, but will not be able to unlock the phone, so your quick connection will solve this problem.

- Track your phone geography:


Depending on the model of your smartphone or the operating system in which it is running, it certainly has the feature (Find My Phone) installed on it previously, because iPhone devices have a feature called (Find My), and Android devices in general have the feature (Find My Device).

So you should make sure to activate this feature as soon as you start using the phone; Because it will help you track the phone in case it is lost or stolen, and it will also help you to delete your data remotely in the event that you cannot access it.

As soon as you lose your phone; You can use another phone or your computer to track the phone as follows:

 

  • If you use an iPhone, go to icloud.com/find.
  • If you are using an Android phone, go to android.com/find.
  • Make sure to log into your account linked to the phone you lost. 
  • Then from the options that appear, press the ring option, as this will make the phone sound, in case 
  • the phone is lost in a closed place, such as the office or home. 
  • You will also find the option to wipe your smartphone data remotely, so if you do, you will not be able to track your phone afterwards, so use this option only as a last resort; Because it will make you lose your phone, but at least your personal data will remain unexploited.
